GENTLY IN THE
FOREST

The left tympanum of the neo-Gothic church from 1882 in Tautenburg, Thuringia had been badly damaged for a long time. The destruction ate through lead and glass over the years. The unfiltered incidence of light blinded the viewer and blocked his view of the remaining elements that disappeared into the shadows.
True-to-original restoration or complete redesign? During the design work, I decided on a careful interpretation of the neo-Gothic style that seeks a balance between the two common methods.
Grisaille, silver stain and ruby glass are reminiscences of ancient glass art. The asymmetry of the image structure, the disruption of the proportions and the painterly, non-stenciled application of paint carefully connect the tympanum with the now in terms of content and design.
